Cyclist mindset:
don’t do it
oh no, please don’t do it
oh shit, you’re gonna do it.
The utterly clueless
pedestrian did it.
Luckily for them,
I anticipated they
were going to do it.

@urlyman yep, can related as a cyclist in London (less so elsewhere) but also as a motorcyclist everywhere but typically with those big metal boxes

So the "I left $AILab for ethical reasons" grift is starting up:
I understand wanting that bag, wanting to be in on a big thing. But if you thought OpenAI or Anthropic were okay a year ago or so, I really am not willing to give you any credit for leaving now.
Like how much fucking money did you make and how much did you sell your book (that will of course come) for?
The only real question is, what did you do with your equity and stock options?

I think we should have a holiday called "power outage day" where you switch off all the breakers in the home for one full day like its a power outage. For the brave ones, it can be "power outage week"

At what point did / will the volume of internet traffic attributable to AI exceed the volume attribute to pornography? (serious question: I have no idea where to get reliable estimates for either)
@chris extraordinary. Crude flows are not heading back to pre-28-Feb any time soon. So any drawdown on reserves just leaves G7 nations with fewer reserves and *no change* to the base conditions.
And 100 million barrels is less than *1 day* of pre-28-Feb global demand.
Incredible dead end thinking
@urlyman @chris in past fuel crises, rather than run down emergency stocks, intended for when we would otherwise run out, governments used to do actions intended to reduce demand, such as reducing speed limits. Now, as well as depleting stocks in the probably vain hope that the effect of the Iran war is noting but a temporary blip, they actually do things like cut fuel duty, to encourage us to use as much oil products as usual.
This is even without getting into a discussion about what to do about the climate crisis and the need for planned degrowth.

"The downside is that if our workplaces and colleagues make us constantly fear we'll lose our in-group status, particularly if there's a conflict between who we are and what our groups seem to value, we experience a potent psychological threat that can dramatically change how we think and act."
- Chapter 5, The Psychology of Software Teams, Dr Cat Hicks @grimalkina
This sentence feels very relevant in the current state of the tech industry. I am appreciating this book immensely.
